Does Vinegar Kill Mold? What Actually Works at Home

A small patch of mold around a bathroom window or basement wall often sends people straight to the kitchen for a bottle of vinegar. It is inexpensive, easy to find, and commonly recommended online.

So, does vinegar kill mold?

Vinegar can inhibit some types of mold, but it does not work equally well against every fungus or on every building material. One laboratory study using household-strength vinegar found that it inhibited Penicillium chrysogenum. The same vinegar showed no growth-inhibiting effect against Aspergillus fumigatus. The researchers concluded that vinegar had limited antifungal action against the indoor fungi they tested.

That distinction matters inside a house.

You usually do not know which mold species is growing from colour or appearance alone. You also need to consider what the mold is growing on and where the moisture is coming from.

A little surface growth on a washable window sill creates one type of cleanup problem. Mold growing through drywall after a plumbing leak creates another.

For homeowners, the useful question becomes:

Can this material be cleaned safely, or has moisture allowed mold to grow inside something that needs to be removed?

That is the question we use when assessing mold problems in Toronto homes.

 

Does Vinegar Really Kill Mold?

There is some scientific support for the antifungal activity of acetic acid, the acidic component found in vinegar. The results vary depending on the fungus, concentration, exposure conditions and surface.

A frequently cited indoor-air study tested vinegar containing about 4.0% to 4.2% acetic acid against two common fungal species.

The results were quite different:

This is why claims such as “vinegar kills 82% of mold species” should be treated cautiously. You will see variations of that number across cleaning websites, yet it is difficult to trace the claim to research that establishes such a percentage for household mold remediation.

The available evidence gives us a narrower conclusion.

Vinegar has antifungal activity against some fungi. It should not be treated as a universal mold killer.

There is another practical issue that laboratory tests cannot fully reproduce.

Mold inside a home grows on materials.

Those materials may include:

  • Painted drywall
  • Paper backing on gypsum board
  • Wood framing
  • Window trim
  • Grout
  • Carpet
  • Insulation
  • Ceiling tiles
  • Concrete
  • Stored cardboard

A cleaning liquid touching fungal growth in a laboratory dish tells us something about the fungus. It does not tell us whether mold has extended through damp drywall paper, behind a baseboard or into carpet backing.

That is why professional mold cleanup is built around material condition, moisture and physical removal, rather than finding one liquid that kills every organism.

Health Canada advises cleaning suitable washable surfaces with unscented soap and water and drying them quickly. Mold-damaged material may need physical removal. It also recommends professional help when there is a large mold problem or when mold returns after cleaning.

Does vinegar kill mold spores?

The answer also depends on the organism.

In the study above, vinegar suppressed sporulation of P. chrysogenum. It did not have the same effect on A. fumigatus.

For a homeowner, trying to kill every individual spore is not a useful cleanup target.

Mold spores already exist naturally in indoor and outdoor air. A building develops a mold problem when moisture gives those spores the conditions they need to grow.

Successful cleanup therefore has several connected parts:

  • Moisture source → Mold growth → Affected material → Cleaning or removal → Drying

Skip the moisture problem and the mold may return regardless of what was sprayed onto the surface.

We see this regularly with bathroom ceilings, basement walls and window areas. Someone cleans the visible marks several times. The staining disappears for a while. A cold surface, leaking pipe, failed exhaust fan or high indoor humidity remains, so new growth eventually appears.

Does White Vinegar Kill Mold?

White distilled vinegar is the type most often associated with household mold cleaning.

The household vinegar used in the antifungal study contained approximately 4.0% to 4.2% acetic acid. It inhibited one of the two common indoor fungi tested and failed to inhibit the other.

That makes white vinegar a possible cleaning agent for minor surface contamination on an appropriate washable material. It does not make it the preferred solution for every mold problem.

Health Canada’s current residential mold guidance takes a simpler approach. For washable surfaces, it recommends an unscented soap solution followed by complete and rapid drying. For walls, it recommends a damp cloth with baking soda or a small amount of unscented soap and warns against getting drywall too wet.

That guidance is useful because the physical condition of the material matters more than the cleaning trend being used.

Consider a bathroom wall.

If a few small spots developed on intact paint because the room stayed humid after showers, surface cleaning and moisture control may solve the problem.

If the same wall has:

  • Bubbling paint
  • Soft drywall
  • A persistent musty smell
  • Water staining
  • Mold returning through the paint
  • Growth along a plumbing line

we would want to investigate what is happening behind the surface.

Adding more vinegar does not answer that question.

What about stronger cleaning vinegar?

Products sold as cleaning vinegar may contain more acetic acid than ordinary culinary vinegar.

A stronger acid does not automatically make a better mold-remediation product. Higher concentrations can also create additional risks for skin, eyes and susceptible materials.

More importantly, increasing the strength of the liquid does nothing to correct wet insulation, damaged drywall, a leaking pipe or condensation inside a wall cavity.

For household mold, the substrate and moisture source remain the bigger variables.

Does Apple Cider Vinegar Kill Mold?

This is worth addressing directly because your choice of vinegar is unlikely to be the deciding factor in whether a building mold problem is successfully cleaned.

Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid and has documented antimicrobial properties in other applications. Research on household mold remediation, however, does not establish apple cider vinegar as a dependable treatment across the different fungi and materials found in homes.

There is also no reason to assume that apple cider vinegar will solve a mold problem that white vinegar could not.

If you have mold on a building surface, we would first look at:

  1. How much mold is present
  2. What material it is growing on
  3. Why that material became damp
  4. Whether the contamination appears to extend below the surface
  5. Whether the mold has returned after previous cleaning

Those answers tell you far more than the label on the vinegar bottle.

For a tiny amount of surface growth on an intact, washable surface, Health Canada says homeowners can often perform the cleanup themselves using the proper procedure and protective equipment. Larger problems, recurring growth and mold-damaged materials require a different approach.

 

The Surface Matters More Than Most Vinegar Guides Explain

This is where many DIY mold articles become misleading.

They discuss mold as though it were sitting on one generic surface. Homes contain materials with very different structures.

A glazed tile and a piece of drywall do not respond to moisture in the same way.

Mold on hard, washable surfaces

Hard surfaces generally give you the best chance of physically cleaning a small amount of surface mold.

Examples include:

  • Glass
  • Some plastics
  • Metal
  • Tile
  • Vinyl
  • Intact hard surfaces

Health Canada recommends scrubbing washable surfaces with an unscented soap solution and drying them completely and quickly.

The U.S. EPA gives similar advice for hard surfaces: clean the mold with detergent and water, then dry the material completely.

Notice what both agencies emphasize.

Cleaning and drying.

Neither builds its homeowner guidance around vinegar being necessary to kill the mold.

Mold on drywall

Drywall deserves much more caution.

The painted face may look relatively smooth, while the gypsum board and paper components underneath can absorb moisture.

Health Canada advises avoiding excessive water during surface cleaning. If mold exists underneath the paint, the affected drywall should be removed and replaced.

That creates a useful dividing line.

A few superficial spots on intact paint after a humid week may be cleanable.

Mold associated with wet, deteriorated or contaminated drywall can require removal.

Spraying vinegar repeatedly onto damaged drywall can also add moisture to a material that already has a moisture problem.

Mold on carpet, ceiling tiles and other porous materials

Porous materials create another challenge because fungal growth can enter spaces below the visible surface.

moldy absorbent materials such as carpet and ceiling tiles may have to be discarded. Mold can occupy spaces and crevices within porous materials, making complete cleaning difficult or impossible.

This explains why a stain disappearing after vinegar is applied does not necessarily tell you that the contaminated material has been remediated.

In our experience, recurrence tells you a lot.

If someone has cleaned the same patch three or four times and it keeps returning in the same location, another round of vinegar is unlikely to provide the information they need.

At that point, we start looking for the moisture pattern.

That may lead us to a cold room exterior wall, plumbing leak, failed bathroom exhaust, basement humidity, window condensation or water entering from outside.

 

Can You Leave Vinegar on Mold Overnight?

One of the stronger GSC queries for this page is “can I leave vinegar on mold overnight?” The short answer is that leaving vinegar on mold longer does not solve the larger problem.

There is no reliable household-remediation standard that says vinegar needs to remain on mold overnight. Research showing antifungal activity under laboratory conditions should not be converted into a universal contact time for walls, wood, grout or other building materials.

Longer exposure also tells you very little about what happened below the surface.

Imagine a patch of mold on painted drywall after a slow plumbing leak. Vinegar might alter what you can see on the paint. It cannot tell you whether the paper backing is contaminated or whether the wall cavity is still damp.

For a genuinely small amount of mold on a washable surface, current Health Canada guidance is much simpler. Clean the surface with an unscented soap solution, then dry it completely and quickly. For drywall, use as little moisture as practical. If mold is underneath the paint, the affected drywall should be removed and replaced.

That is a better way to think about contact time.

Cleaning should remove contamination from a cleanable surface. Drying should remove the conditions that support new growth.

How We Would Handle a Small Mold Spot at Home

Not every mold spot requires professional remediation.

Health Canada says homeowners can generally clean small mold areas themselves when proper procedures and protective equipment are used. Its homeowner guidance identifies a small patch as less than one square metre on an appropriate non-porous surface. Larger problems, mold-damaged materials and recurring growth deserve more caution.

If someone showed us a few spots around a window sill, bathroom tile or another intact washable surface, we would first look at why that particular location became damp.

Around a Toronto window in winter, condensation is a common clue.

In a bathroom, the pattern may point to poor exhaust ventilation.

Along a basement wall, we would want to know whether the moisture comes from humidity, condensation or water entering through the foundation.

Those observations determine what happens next.

For a small, surface-level problem, a homeowner can generally:

  1. Correct the moisture source first.
  2. Wear appropriate gloves, eye protection and a suitable mask while cleaning.
  3. Clean an appropriate washable surface with unscented soap and water.
  4. Avoid soaking drywall or other moisture-sensitive materials.
  5. Dry the cleaned area quickly.
  6. Watch the area over the following days and weeks for recurring moisture or growth.

Health Canada specifically recommends mask, goggles and gloves for household mold cleanup and emphasizes fixing leaks or water infiltration before treating the visible result.

That approach may seem less dramatic than spraying a “mold killer,” but it addresses the part of the problem that determines whether mold returns.

The part homeowners often miss

We sometimes hear a version of this story:

“I cleaned it and it disappeared, but it came back two months later.”

That recurrence is useful information.

Health Canada states that mold returning after cleaning usually indicates that the moisture source has not been removed.

At that stage, the question has changed.

You are no longer trying to decide which cleaner works best.

You are trying to determine why one part of the building keeps providing enough moisture for mold to grow.

Search results often turn this into a contest between two household products.

We would approach it differently.

Health Canada’s current residential guidance says not to use bleach to clean mold. It recommends physical cleaning of suitable washable surfaces with unscented soap and water, followed by thorough drying.

The U.S. EPA also says routine use of a biocide such as chlorine bleach is generally not recommended for mold cleanup. It points out an important reason: killing mold is not the same as removing it. Dead mold can still cause allergic reactions in some people.

So the practical comparison looks more like this:

A wet wall stays wet regardless of whether someone sprayed vinegar or bleach on the paint.

Never mix vinegar and bleach

This deserves its own warning because the combination can be dangerous.

Never mix vinegar with household bleach.

Vinegar is acidic. Health Canada warns that bleach reacts with acidic cleaning products, including vinegar, and can release toxic gases. Exposure can affect the eyes and respiratory system and may become serious.

Using one product after another can also create a mixing risk if residue remains on the surface or inside a container.

If bleach has already been used, do not follow it with vinegar.

A homeowner might spray the visible edge with white vinegar and wipe away the staining. If water is entering behind the wall, the surface treatment has reached only the part that was visible.

The same problem occurs with:

A surface can look better while the underlying building condition remains unchanged.

This is also why painting over mold is a poor fix. paint does not kill mold or prevent it from returning when the underlying problem remains.

When Vinegar Is No Longer the Question You Should Be Asking

Around a window, we might check condensation and air movement.

The drywall feels soft or swollen

A surface stain can sometimes remain superficial. Softness, swelling or crumbling suggests the building material itself has been affected by moisture.

Health Canada advises replacing drywall when mold exists underneath the painted surface.

That is a removal problem rather than a vinegar problem.

There is a musty smell but little visible mold

Odour can lead us to areas that are not immediately visible.

We may investigate:

  • Behind baseboards
  • Under flooring
  • Inside cabinets
  • Around plumbing penetrations
  • Inside ceiling cavities

The goal is to find the damp material or hidden growth rather than masking the smell.

The mold appeared after a leak or flood

The history of the area matters.

A plumbing leak, roof leak, overflowing appliance or basement water event can wet materials beyond the visible stain.  previous flooding, roof leaks and pipe leaks may justify further investigation of wall or ceiling cavities when concerns remain unexplained.

Growth covers a larger area

Get professional help when mold growth extends beyond a small area of less than one square metre. Its more detailed guidance also recommends professional assistance for large problems and whenever the required moisture correction is unclear.

The larger the affected area becomes, the more important containment, material removal and exposure control become.

Mold appears near an HVAC system

Air movement changes the situation.

Growth near returns, mechanical equipment or ductwork deserves assessment because the contamination may involve more than the visible surface.

Spraying vinegar into ducts or mechanical equipment is not a substitute for determining what became wet and which components are affected.

So, Should You Use Vinegar on Mold?
